How AI enhances personalization in education - Roger James Hamilton, eCampus News

Learning now is so much more than making notes from a textbook and critiquing other people’s ideas. It is cultivating your own vision of the future and how things can be improved to better our lives and advance the next generation. AI technology is a key driver in this change and will enable students to have a deeper understanding of global events and how they can make an impact. Personalization in education is just one pillar of AI that I want to explore. In many ways, AI is an extension of ourselves. It can help offload the typically boring tasks we have to put up with and realise our potential by accessing new information and learning at our own speed.

Higher education groups representing a range of colleges and universities told the Education Department this week that the agency has a lot of work to do over the next four months to fix its proposed gainful-employment rule. Education Department Eyes New Requirements for All Programs - Katherine Knott, Inside Higher Ed

The Education Department’s proposed regulations would give the secretary more discretion to yank an institution’s eligibility for federal financial aid. Institutions are worried about unintended consequences. The Education Department wants to give students more information about all types of college programs, a move that supporters say is significant and a step forward. Under the plan, the department would report more data about all programs on students’ debt loads and earnings and could potentially use that information to revoke an institution’s eligibility to access federal financial aid. Colleges and universities generally support the new transparency requirements but say the other aspects are vague and subjective.

More Borrowers at Risk of Defaulting - Katherine Knott, Inside Higher Ed

More student loan borrowers are behind on their credit card bills and loans than before the pandemic, and they are paying more because of rising interest rates, a new report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found. The rising delinquencies mean that more borrowers will be at risk of defaulting when payments turn back on later this summer after a three-year pause. Nearly 20 percent of borrowers, about 5.9 million, have two or more risk factors that indicate they’ll struggle with making their student loan payments. That’s up from the estimated 5.1 million borrowers who were at risk in April 2022.

Around the halls: What should the regulation of generative AI look like? - Nicol Turner Lee, et al; Brookings

But where Congress could garner a very quick win on the regulatory front is to require consumer disclosures when AI-generated content is in use and add labeling or some type of multi-stakeholder certification process to encourage improved transparency and accountability for existing and future use cases. Once again, the European Union is already leading the way on this. In its most recent AI Act, the EU requires that AI-generated content be disclosed to consumers to prevent copyright infringement, illegal content, and other malfeasance related to end-user lack of understanding about these systems.

AI Experts Warn Artificial Intelligence Poses 'Risk of Extinction' - Matthew Humphries, PC Magazine

A long list of AI scientists, engineers, and other notable figures have signed a statement warning of the urgent risks posed by artificial intelligence, including extinction. The Statement on AI Risk(Opens in a new window), posted on the Center for AI Safety (CAIS) website, argues that "mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war." Such a statement could easily be viewed as hyperbole, but then you scan the list of experts and notable figures who put their signature to it, and it's hard not to take it seriously. Those signatories include Demis Hassabis (CEO, Google Deepmind), Sam Altman (CEO, OpenAI), and Dario Amodei (CEO, Anthropic).

For Some Autistic People, ChatGPT Is a Lifeline - Amanda Hoover & Samantha Spengler, Wired

The chatbot can help rehearse communication skills and for some provides a resource to turn to when life is tough. “A lot of autistic people have grown up being told that they are aliens, or that they sound like robots, or there’s just something wrong with them,” Young says. When ChatGPT came along, they “quickly realized that it kind of sounded like I do”—logical and specific. Autism affects people in many different ways and individuals can have varying needs. ChatGPT may not work for some or even most, but a common feature of autism is that social interactions can be difficult or confusing.

5 Red Flags That Someone Is Not Fit to Lead People: People leave managers, not companies - Marcel Schwantes, Inc.

I am concerned about managers being promoted into leadership roles when they have no business being there. Leadership is demonstrated through competence, not attitude, confidence, or charisma. It takes ability and skills. That's why the single biggest decision any organization will make is whom they name manager. When you name the wrong person manager, nothing fixes that bad decision. We've all heard this tune play like a broken record: People leave managers, not companies.

US Sues Online Learning Company Over Students’ Data Privacy - Hye Jung Han, Human Rights Watch

The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has made history by suing an online learning company, Edmodo, for collecting and using children’s data to target them with behavioral advertising. The proposed $6 million fine, which awaits a final ruling, comes one year after Human Rights Watch uncovered how Edmodo and other online learning products authorized by governments during the Covid-19 pandemic infringed on children’s privacy. Edmodo was a website and app widely used by children in kindergarten, elementary, and middle schools across the US until September 2022, when the company pivoted to only selling its product to governments. The company benefited from explosive demand in 2020, reporting a 1,500 percent increase in users in the first five months of the pandemic as governments and schools rushed to connect children to online learning.

Professors Plan Summer AI Upskilling, With or Without Support - Susan D’Agostino, Inside Higher Ed

Academics seeking respite from the fire hose of AI information and hot takes launch summer workshops. But many of the grass-roots efforts fall short of meeting demand. Microsoft and Google are moving forward with integrating artificial intelligence text-generation into the environments where modern humans write. As the pace of progress in AI writing tools accelerates, faculty members across the summer spectrum face a shared challenge: How can they upskill in AI for teaching and learning—fast? Some academics and institutions are offering AI faculty workshops or, in the words of Anna Mills, English instructor at the College of Marin, “safe spaces where we don’t feel overwhelmed by the fire hose of [AI] information and hot takes.

What We Do (and Don't) Know About Noncredit Workforce Programs - Gelsey Mehl, New America

The federal government, states, institutional leaders, and researchers are striving to understand the entirety of workforce offerings in the United States. But there is a huge blind spot: noncredit offerings. That’s why a team led by Michelle Van Noy of Rutgers University and Mark D’Amico of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, along with Peter Bahr of the University of Michigan and Di Xu of the University of California, Irvine, are investigating what data is available on noncredit programs in three states. There are a lot of noncredit offerings. The researchers counted 924 unique offerings at 15 community colleges in Iowa, 396 at 12 community colleges in Louisiana, and 6,045 across the 23 Virginia Community College System (VCCS) institutions. Most of these offerings are occupational trainings.

Supercharge Your ChatGPT Prompts With Auto-GPT - David Nield, Wired

Auto-GPT is the latest evidence for this: It leverages the power of ChatGPT to create an autonomous AI assistant, capable of taking on tasks and projects on its own and working through multiple steps in a job without you having to prompt it every time. In other words, it does a lot of the hard work for you, without you having to come up with your own follow-up responses or ideas. Think about everything you can do with ChatGPT, then imagine rolling that into a system that can supply its own feedback and make its own choices. Take coding for example: ChatGPT can output blocks of code based on your specifications, but Auto-GPT can manage an entire software project for you.

A Survey of 31,000 Employees Shows 49 Percent Fear A.I. Will Steal Their Jobs. They're Right to Worry - Minda Zetlin, Inc.

Almost half of employees--49 percent--fear they will lose their jobs to A.I., according to a new survey commissioned by Microsoft. At the same time, 70 percent hope that A.I. will help them manage their ever-growing workloads instead. It's clear from these numbers that many people see A.I. as both a benefit and a threat. This oddly contradictory view of artificial intelligence is somehow a perfect symbol of its place in our imaginations at this moment in history--something that will eliminate countless jobs, boost creativity, and put an end to drudgery, or perhaps a monstrous force that will take over our planet and enslave humanity.

AUTOGPT: THE AI THAT CAN SELF-IMPROVE IS SCARY! - Matt, AutoGPT

So, what exactly is Auto GPT? Well, it’s an AI system that is capable of writing its own code using GPT-4 and executing Python scripts. This means that it can recursively debug, develop, and self-improve. And the best part is that it’s free and open-source. One of the most impressive things about Auto GPT is its ability to autonomously reflect and improve its behaviors. This is achieved through a feedback loop that uses plan, criticize, act, read feedback, and plan again. It’s like having a personal trainer for your coding skills! Auto GPT is already being used in some pretty amazing ways. For example, it can find unclaimed money on the internet, grow your social media account, and even develop an e-commerce business. All you have to do is give it a goal, and it will scrape the web for the best information and autonomously work toward achieving that goal.
